Volunteered at the English Language Learning Centre – 5 Points
Volunteering at TRU’s English Language Learning Centre allowed me to support learners while helping create an inclusive and engaging environment. Working with students from many cultural and linguistic backgrounds taught me how differently people experience language learning, and it strengthened my ability to communicate clearly and respectfully. I often had to adapt my explanations, listen carefully, and find supportive ways to help students build confidence.
Through this, I developed greater patience, empathy, and cultural sensitivity. This experience helped me understand the challenges newcomers face, and it reminded me of my own journey adjusting to Canada. I hope to continue contributing to programs that support language learners and to apply the communication and intercultural skills I have developed, in future academic and professional settings.
Volunteered with Kamloops Rotaract Club – 2 Points
Volunteering with Kamloops Rotaract Club in events such as Crabfest, Ribfest, Pitstop, the BC Wildlife Park clean up, Brewloops, and Chef in the City allowed me to engage meaningfully with the local community while collaborating with volunteers from many cultural and professional backgrounds. Each event required different responsibilities such as helping with setup, guiding participants, coat-checking, serving food, or supporting clean-up, which strengthened my adaptability and willingness to step into new roles. Working in fast-paced service-oriented environments taught me the importance of clear communication, teamwork, and staying calm under pressure.
Participating in these events also helped me better understand the values of community service in Canada and how local initiatives bring people together. Through these experiences, I became more confident in interacting with diverse groups, learned how to contribute effectively in team-based settings, and developed a stronger sense of civic engagement. I hope to continue supporting community initiatives and using the collaboration and leadership skills I gained through Rotaract in both future volunteer work and my professional life.
